Substituting “faith in” for “faith of” makes a big difference in the meanings of several passages. In modern translations, all of the following passages are translated “faith in.”
Summary of passages that describe the faith OF Jesus:
- Romans 3:22 The righteousness of God was displayed through Jesus’ faith, not our faith. Our faith displays the righteousness of God less frequently.
- Romans 3:26 We are to have the faith of Jesus, not faith in Jesus. This is similar to 1 John 2:6, in which we are to walk as Jesus walked. Also, 2 Timothy 1:13 admonishes us to persevere by Jesus’ faith, not by our own.
- Galatians 2:16 We are justified by the faith of Jesus, not by our own faith.
- Galatians 2:20 I live by His faith, not by my faith.
- Galatians 3:22 Jesus’ faith enabled the promise by which sinful believers are rescued from themselves.
- Ephesians 3:12 Our confidence toward and access to God are due to Jesus’ faith, not our faith.
- Philippians 3:9 Our righteousness is based on Jesus’ faith, not our own.
- James 2:1 Our goal is to have the faith of Jesus.
- Revelation 14:12 The faithful are described as obedient and having the faith of Jesus, not faith in Jesus.
