The Greek word translated discipline is also translated instruct, nurture, and teach
- Luke 23:16, 22 “I will therefore chastise Him and release him.”
- Acts 7:22 Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians
- Romans 2:20 …an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes…
- 1 Corinthians 11:32 When we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord that we may not be condemned with the world
- 2 Corinthians 6:9 …as chastened and not killed.
- Ephesians 6:4 …bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.
- 1 Timothy 1:20 …that they may learn not to blaspheme.
- 2 Timothy 2:25 …in humility correcting those in opposition…
- Titus 2:12 [the grace of God…] teaching us…
- Hebrews 12:5 – 11 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons; “My sons, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be discouraged when we are rebuked by Him; for whom the Lord loves, He chastened, and scourges every son whom He receives.” If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there that a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

- Compare this training to Romans 5:3 – 4 and James 1:2 – 4.
Three Greek words are translated “punish,” or “punishment.”
- Matthew 25:46 and these will go away into everlasting punishment
- Acts 4:21 Finding do way to punish them…
- Acts 22:5 …to bring in chains … to Jerusalem to be punished.
- Acts 26:11 I punished them often in every synagogue
- 2 Thessalonians 1:9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction
- Hebrews 10:29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot.
- 1 Peter 2:14 …to governors, as to those who are sent by him, for the punishment of evildoers
- 2 Peter 2:9 The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment
- 1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment.
- Punishment is a penalty for past behavior, not designed to correct
Neither the just nor the unjust are punished by God in this life. The unjust will enter their punishment at Judgment.
- God is patient (2 Peter 3:9), providing as much time as possible for the purpose of avoiding the assignment of punishment, but prefers to forgive.
