Two different Greek words are used: eulogeo (good word) and makarios (fortunate).

Makarios is more about attaining a status above the cares of everyday life.  In centuries past, it was used to refer to the carefree life of the gods.  Closer to Jesus time, it became the description of the wealthy who were above the daily cares of lesser folks.  Finally, it was even used to describe those with successful children or a beautiful wife.  This is the backdrop against which Jesus began the Beatitudes.

Eulogeo is the root of our word eulogy.  The word is used more than 400 times in the Greek version of the Old Testament.  The power to bless was irrevocable, as with the blessing of a son.  God’s blessings are also called promises.  People bless God by making promises and speaking well of Him.
